Rugby sees an uptick of 51% in participation while traditional sports see significant drops: (stats cover teenagers and youth sports, so focus is middle school & high school sports)

What U.S. plays: Softball, football, hockey, baseball down over decade

In terms of sports Americans play, wrestling, softball, football, hockey and baseball are long-term losers.

The latest authoritative Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association annual report on U.S. sports participation, based on about 15,000 individual surveys and 24,000 households surveys, found that about 2.1 million Americans say they competed in wrestling last year -- down 44% from 2000.

Other drops in total participants over the past decade even as the U.S. population steadily expanded: slow-pitch softball (-38%), football (-16%), ice hockey (-12%), fast-pitch softball (-11%) and baseball (-8%).

Basketball held steady as the most-played team sport, ending the decade with about as many participants as it had in 2000 -- 26.3 million. (That easily topped soccer, which had a total of about 20 million for its outdoor and indoor games.)

Part of the ongoing declines in traditional sport comes from participant growth in niche sports. Between 2009 and 2010, lacrosse had a 38% gain -- albeit to a diminutive 1.6 million total players -- while rugby jumped 51% to 1.1 million.

REGISTRATION

Registration is now open for the 2012 Rugby season.  At Raptor Rugby we strive to teach our athletes to play with dignity, honor and respect.  We will practice hard, play hard and will have fun doing it.

Life long friendships are built on Rugby fields.

The season runs from late November to April and if High School makes it to playoffs they will play into late May.  Players are required to purchase the uniform.  This is not included in the player fee.  We are looking at a few options and trying to keep the cost low.  We anticipate that it will cost approximately $70 for youth and $140 for High School as team sweats and a team bag is required for High School.  We will let you know as soon as the uniform has been finalized.

The player fees are as follows:

U8: $150.00 (Turn 8 by 9/1/2011)
U10: $175.00 (Turn 10 by 9/1/2011)
U12: $175.00 (Turn 12 by 9/1/2011)
Middle School: $200.00 (Grades 6, 7 & 8)
Junior Varsity: $250.00 (Grades 9 & 10)
High School: $250.00 (Grades 11 & 12 )

JUNIOR VARSITY & HIGH SCHOOL - REGISTER BEFORE DECEMBER 15 AND RECEIVE $50 DISCOUNT.

These fees include a Raptor Rugby Tee as well as the cost to have every player registered with USA Rugby and The Northern California Youth Rugby Association.

In January we will have Raptor Day!  This is when you will purchase and receive your equipment.  All players are required to attend as their photo will be taken for the Player I.D. Cards.  You will also need to bring a copy of your Birth Certificate.  High School players are also required to give a copy of their schools I.D. Card.  Supporters gear will also be available for purchase.  Date to be determined.

VOLUNTEERS

As you know these organizations are run by parents like you and I.  Having said this, you will be asked to assist in some way.  Some of the ways to help will be with equipment hand out, hospitality, field prep for high school games, and High School Tour.  At Raptor Day you will have an opportunity to sign up.
